Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

This wine smells like an irresistible come-on. It’s wildly fruity, forwardly ripe and layered in fascinating scents from sweet summer fruits to savory, North African spices. The palate is more schoolmistress in its exacting qualities, with less plush, ripe fruits than the nose suggests. Moreover, the palate is seriously rigorous in grippy, gruff tannins. The wine’s acidity is nicely knit, but its character is perky enough to strikingly emphasize the tannins. With some air, infiltrating notes of leather and smoky barbecue create a rusticity that makes you wonder if the wine will really age that long. For the medium-term, this should be a fun one. Drink 2019–2021.
